Not altogether distant from pqvement Ealing Studio films of the later decades– but all is not well. But at five, Mr Dersingham returns and informs Mr Smeeth that the newcomer has offered a cheap supply of veneers from the Baltic, and their immediate future is assured. Pavemeny very popular in its time, but Priestley has gone out of fashion as the years have gone by unfairly I think. They go on a second date, but she does not turn up to a third date, and he is devastated.

Even Turgis, bruised, beaten and dismissed, his romantic dreams crushed into fragments and his person flung down the office stairs by his indifferent ladylove’s outraged father, finds solace in the regard of Poppy Sellers, the junior typist. JB Priestley: adventures of the ‘tradesman of letters’
He has been likened to Dickens, and when a novelist is likened pavemeny Dickens one must stop and ask the reason. The Chapman of Rhymes I was quite gripped and read quickly, although the outcome is not a surprise.
The firm, which imports veneers and inlays to sell to cabinet makers and furniture manufacturers, is struggling to cope with the consequences of poor management, declining demand and an economy hardly geared to a sudden improvement in trade.

I ended up wondering what happened to Turgis, Mr Smeeth, Miss Matfield et all after the book finished. Priestley was at his best. The contempt in which Priestley was held by some of his fellow-writers can sometime seem rather startling. Its real subject is detachment, the absolute conviction expressed by most of its characters that their lives would be better lived out elsewhere, doing other things and in the company of other people.
The day to day lives of a group of Londoners working in an office for a firm that sells veneers that has hit hard times. Criticism … borrowed ‘bestseller’ from the book trade, where it means what it says and nothing more, and made it pejorative. His daughter’s appearance, grimaces and gestures are, as Priestley notes, “temporarily based on those of an Americanised Polish jewess” — one assumes this is Greta Garbo — “who, from her nest in Hollywood, had stamped them on these young girls all over the world”.
The prologue depicts the arrival in London of Mr Golspie, who has come by steamship from an unnamed Baltic country. Golspie looks set to change its fortunes. Simonn Dimitrova rated it it was amazing Feb 04, Dec 04, Ginni rated it really liked it.
Mr Golspie returns shortly before Christmas, goes away again on Christmas Eve, and returns again in time for New Year’s Eve, on which he contrives to take Miss Matfield out for the night.

Ppriestley is slow and the staff struggle against a prifstley of growing competition, rising prices and recession. Priestley, an author I’ve been meaning to try for years; this reading was partly inspired by going to see a production of ‘When we are married’ at the West Yorkshire Playhouse a month or so past.
The next evening, Mr Golspie takes Mr Smeeth out for a drink at the White Horseand tells him he ought to ask for a rise.
